Giveaway: Week 3 of the Shinobi iPad Mini Case Giveaway

Posted on August 26, 2013 by Ee-Leng Chang | 2 Comments

Happy Monday! Week 3 of the Shinobi iPad Mini Case Giveaway has dawned.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment below answering some questions. I love playing and reading those random survey games and haven't done one in ages. So here's a short one that I'd like you all to play with me:

1. Have you ever found Wally/Waldo?

No :( though I've only ever had the patience to try for a couple of minutes at most. Maybe one day I will! Must not give up!!

2. Who would you prefer to have tea with, Darth Vader or the Joker?

For laughs, I'd go with the Joker, but for survival I'd go with Darth Vader because he seems less unpredictable and more reasonable than the Joker. For example, what if the Joker suddenly decided that it would be so funny to see what I'd look like with a teapot in my eyeball? So hmm...I like my life so probably Darth Vader. Plus I want to see how he drinks tea through his mask.

3. What's your favourite video game of all time?

Zeus: Master of Olympus!!! It's an awesome city-building game by Impression Games that came out in 2000. I've pulled many all-nighters playing this and have reinstalled and replayed all the campaigns and the expansions multiple times over many years every time I got a new computer. To give some context as to how much I love this game, I play a lot of games (well I used to but I don't seem to have time for games much anymore *sniff*) but I very, very rarely finish games or revisit them. Aw man, now I really feel like playing some Zeus!

4. Would you rather go up against a horde of zombies (the kind that runs!) or have a ghostly encounter?

I will take my chances against fast zombies over ghosts any day! I know the drill, zombies can be killed but I wouldn't have a clue what to do with ghosts. I think I can deal with something tangible and physical like a zombie. Just don't get bitten, right? And zombies can't just float through walls either. You can't hide from ghosts, they can go through everything!

5. Who would win in a fight: a hippo or a shark?

I reckon a hippo would win. I've been reading up on both lately and I'm really impressed by hippos! They sound so very grumpy, they will attack humans even when there is no apparent provocation. And they regularly take on crocodiles. Sharks on the other hand, I've read that certain sharks go into a hypnotic state when rubbed on the nose. And I've read accounts from people who work with sharks that if you hit sharks in the face, they sort of accept that you're tough and they don't want to mess with you so they don't attack. (Disclaimer: I'm paraphrasing very liberally here so please don't go out and punch a shark in the face and expect to be buddies with the shark!)

And now I want to hear from you too! Here's the questions:

1. Have you ever found Wally/Waldo?

2. Who would you prefer to have tea with, Darth Vader or the Joker?

3. What's your favourite video game of all time?

4. Would you rather go up against a horde of zombies (the kind that runs!) or have a ghostly encounter?

5. Who would win in a fight: a hippo or a shark?

This giveaway ends on Sunday, 1st September and I will be randomly selecting a winner again. Hope you have fun playing this game with me and Good Luck! :)

Giveaway: Four Weeks of Shinobi the Zombie!

Posted on August 12, 2013 by Ee-Leng Chang | 9 Comments

It's Hooby Groovy Giveaway Time!

Recently, I had a zombie accident at work. I was working on Shinobi the Zombie iPad Mini Cases and as soon as I laid the last completed one down, I realised I'd made a dire, dire mistake. I'd forgotten to sew on the band-aids that are on the back pocket of Shinobi!

And so now I have 4 Shinobi iPad Mini Cases that are missing their back pocket band-aids. :( I thought that I'd try to find them some owners who might still love them despite their band-aid-less bottoms.

So, without further ado, let's kick start the Four Week Shinobi iPad Mini Case Giveaway!

The Prize:

Each lucky winner receives 1 Shinobi iPad Mini Case, here's the front of Shinobi:

And here's the band-aid-less back:

It's still got its back pocket.

How the Giveaway works:

Every week for the next 4 weeks, I will be giving away 1 Shinobi iPad Mini Case. The Giveaway begins on Monday and a winner is chosen on Sunday night (Australian time).

So Week 1 of the Shinobi iPad Mini Case has commenced and will run until the 18th August.

How to Enter Week 1:

I'm feeling exceptionally silly for forgetting those band-aids, so I want to hear your silly mistakes too! Leave a comment below and tell me about a silly mistake that you've made! Did you forgot to take your keys out with you and now you're locked out of your house? Or have you ever put salt into your coffee instead of sugar?

There are no right or wrong answers, I just want to hear from you. :) At the end of the week, I'll randomly pick a winner.

If you've never made a silly mistake ever (for example if you are a robot ;p), you can still enter the giveaway, just tell me a little something about yourself. Your favourite colour, your favourite cartoon character, your favourite Hooby Groovy creation, anything at all! :)

Oh and make sure you Like the Hooby Groovy Facebook Page so you can keep an eye on the results of the giveaway which will be posted on this blog and Facebook.

So that's it, just leave a comment of a silly mistake you've made and see if you're the lucky winner at the end of this week. Good luck! :)

EDIT: The Week 1 Giveaway is now closed! I used a random number generator to pick the winner and the winner is...*drum roll*...Suzanne! Congrats Suzanne, you'll be getting an email from me very soon. Thanks to all who participated and stay tuned for another chance to win again in Week 2.

Bespoke Creations: Miffy MacBook Case

Posted on July 15, 2013 by Ee-Leng Chang | 0 Comments

I recently created a bespoke Miffy 13in MacBook Case for a customer as a gift for her sister. Beyond knowing what Miffy looks like, I discovered I really didn't know much about Miffy the character after all. So began my research and education into all things Miffy.

I had always assumed that Miffy was a cute character probably created in Asia (well Miffy is certainly extremely popular in Asia) and I was quite surprised to find that Miffy was created by Dutch author and illustrator Dick Bruna in 1955! Miffy's Dutch name is Nijntje, which I have no idea how to pronounce, but I learnt that it's a shortening of the Dutch word for "little rabbit".

Image from Amazon

I never had or read any Miffy books when I was a child so I was unfamiliar with what the books were like. So I decided to look up some of the Miffy books and see what Miffy is all about. I have always found the character of Miffy to be really cute and I really liked the minimalist and simple design of Miffy. But now that I've seen more Miffy books, I really think I like the style of the book even more than I like the design of the character! The design and the use of colours in Miffy books are just so charming!

So I went into my bespoke project with Miffy books as my inspiration, rather than the character of Miffy. When I first received the request, of course my first idea that sprang to mind was to use Miffy as the entire body of the case and I was immediately perplexed by how to incorporate Miffy's long ears (similar problem to my previous Pikachu creation). But once I had a look at Miffy books, I knew I wanted to do a Miffy Book-inspired case, rather than a Miffy-inspired case. I hope you get what I mean! :)

Image from Amazon

I really loved the retro colours of Miffy and other Dick Bruna book covers and so I wanted to incorporate those kind of colours and feel to the case. And I noticed that one of the first pages of many Miffy books was a page with a picture of Miffy and the text "This book belongs to _____" That took me right back to my childhood and I think is the nicest things about children books. I remember how I would write my name and then feel annoyed because my writing was so crap that it felt like I just spoilt the book! But I think there's something nice about leaving your own mark in a book and every time I borrowed a book or found a second hand book with someone else's name in it, it just felt like the world was a smaller place and it gave the book a history.

Anyway, going back to the design of this case, I wanted to incorporate that little thing into the case, so I suggested it for the back. Miffy, with a text line: "This case belongs to ____" and I would embroider the name in big loopy writing for that children book charm. Understandably, my customer was hesitant about the name on the back but she did like the Miffy on the back so we went with that. Another request she had was for a zipper closure. I had never really worked with zippers before, especially with this thick felt so I was a bit nervous but determined to figure it out!

So here's the final product:

The front of the case is a very simple Miffy and I made sure to include the very distinctive side stripe that runs down the left side of the book covers. My customer had requested an "S" initial on Miffy for her sister too.

The back has Miffy (I imagine she's going to school). Originally, this was designed to be slightly higher, with the text running on the bottom. Since we omitted the text, I lowered Miffy to make the back more balanced.

And here's a few more from different angles:

Besides the zipper, the Miffy on the back was actually the most difficult part of the manufacturing process lol! I had to figure out how to cut it out so that Miffy arm would go over her bag and have it look nice and 3D.

I think my favourite thing about this case is the colours. I tried to pay homage to the design aesthetic of Dick Bruna and I hope I succeeded!

Overall, a very fun and challenging creation and the best part was the discovery of the wonderful illustration work of Dick Bruna. If you'd like to know more about the creator of Miffy, this article is a good place to start and here's an awesome archive of his book covers

Feel free to contact me at any time via if you would like me to create a bespoke creation for you!

Daily Sketch: Trapped - 14 Mar 2012

Posted on March 14, 2012 by eelengchang | 0 Comments

Since today is the last day for the Ewok iPad Case Facebook Giveaway, I knew I wanted to draw Ewoks. But I was pretty stuck on what context to draw them in and so my headspace went a weird place where somehow I thought, "If I was an Ewok and was in a Star Wars play, the last character I'd want to be is Princess Leia." Somehow, I think gold bikinis might clash a bit too much with fur.

Do you know what doesn't clash with fur? An Ewok iPad Case! And you can win a custom-made, once-off Ewok iPad Case lovingly handmade by moi. All you have to do is:

1. LIKE the Hooby Groovy Facebook Page

2. SHARE any of the Facebook posts regarding this Ewok iPad Case Giveaway. Make sure your SHARE settings are on Public.

3. Leave me a comment to let me know that you've done steps 1 and 2.

There's about 22 hours to go til the end of this giveaway (when every single place on Earth has entered 15th March 2012) so make sure you enter before it ends!

I'll be picking the winner of the Ewok iPad Case after the 22 hours via a random number generator and I'll also be picking 10 runner ups who will each receive a 50% discount coupon code to use on any order at the Hooby Groovy shop

Quick recap on the iPad Case itself:

- Inspired by the oh-so-cuddly Ewoks in Star Wars

- Will fit an iPad 1, iPad 2 (with or without a Smart Cover), and the new iPad

- Made with high quality 2mm felt

- Features a back pocket for notebooks, pens, cables, etc

- Ears and arms are flappy to give it a more 3D look

- Closure tab on top to secure your device within

You can check out more photos of the case here and read more about the giveaway too.
